1V- V r - _ JACOBSEN'S DISAPPEARANCE. HOW ALDEIDGE WAS ARRESTED. The Melbourne Argus of February 4th has the following regarding this ca?e :— An arrest was made in Bourke» street yesterday by Detectives Ward and McManainy which may assist materially in c' earing away the mystery surrounding the disappear- \ anoe of a contractor named Jacobsfen from Pahiatua, near Wellington, New Zealand, in November, 1790. The story of disappearance is a familiar one in Australian bush history, and one with which the names of Haunted Stream and Ringwood, in victoria, will always be associated, > because of the tragic examples of it •* there afforded. During 1890 the contractor Jacobsen, who was a married man with three children, was joined by a younger man named William Smith, and together they con traded to clear some land *aW Pahiatua, n^ar Wellington, for^^fc selector, one George Hambrook!^ Ihe contract was scarcely completed when Smith engaged a carrier to transport his camp and personal luggage to the nearest township. who knew JacobseS, asked if he were not going too, and
