During the morning heavy rain fell but the afternoon turned out beautifully fine, and everything was favourable for rowing. A goodly nu aiber of spectators assembled on the- bank and wharf at 8 p.m., the hour appointed for the final event for Mr Hunter's silver "dp. The competitors, T. Nye and Murray Thompson were both in good form and a good race was looked for, Thompson being the favorite. From a good start, Nye jumped away with a lead and led by a length at the buoy, where he made a bad turq. which allowed Thompson to slip in between him and ther bugy and gain three lengths. i Nye, l however settled down to hi 3 work, and was gaining on Thompson fast, being only half a length away at the, fisherman's hut. Here all interest which was getting very keen, wag killed by an unfortunate , ■ fouly Thompson running Nye on shore. Nye at once stopped rowing, allows ing Thompson to go on and then tried to get-on the wharf .side v of Thompson, but his opponent pulled across his bow ; again. Nye tried to get in on the inside but was again crossed by Thompson; Nye V : bow once or twice running into the stern of Thompson's boat. From the ! top end of the wharf to the finishing post it was a procession, Thompson coming in with two lengths lefatfc Nye at once entered a protest wHich was allowed. This- makes Nye the winner of the cup. ■ - ' > Mr Geo Gray acted -as* starter and gave every satisfaction, his decision being received without dissent. . The pair-oared races for Mr Stan^ sell's trophies were then starbech Of the nine crews = entered only one scratched (0. Symons and Seymour), and that was on account of the bow man having to leave the distiiot before the event came off. The first •oVeivs' to face the- stoarter were J . Howan (sir) Redmond (bow) v. A. Shadbolt " (str) and'^Bridge (bow). The latter were looked upon as the probable winners The race) from the start to finish was a splen? did one, both crews doing 'theitf tofc-* most. As they passed the wharf Shadbolt had a lead of half a length, but in passing the shed- both boats were on even terms ; when Howanput on a spurt and Won* by twd ; lengths. The finish might have been closer had Shadbolt kept his boat out in the river further. - The second heat was between Potter (str) Cook (bow) v. F Shadbolt (str) Chuck (bow). This looked upon as a moral for Potter as their opponents had not been doing enbn'gtf}Wfk<>x: In' Reality it was a walk over for them. Soon after turning the bend Shadbolt 's, bow man caught a crab which thrfew Shadbolt nut of tHe''boat and gave him a ducking, he, however, man,

aged to scramble back again and rowed home some distance behind Potter $bo had waited for them. (str), Lewis (bow) v. Inivie Bradcock (bow), faced the starter for the third heat. The re suit of this race was something in the nature of a surprise to many. Imrie's crew starting as favorites, but Nye who got a good start wun by three lengths -*J. Symons (sir), H. Austin (bow), rfrvfed a bye, their opponents having 'SiQS&toHed. < owles (str), Morse (bow), who drew a bye, rowed over the course. Mr Gray who also acted as starter in these races and Mr Little who acted as judge gave every satisfaction. The drawing of the heats for next ' Tnesday will take place to-morrow.
