HUNTER'S CUP.

TO THB EDITOn OF THE HW.VWATU HRRAIiD

Sir, —I beg to ask a few questions in reference to the foul alleged to have been made by Howan in his rowing against Nye last Saturday week. Is ifc not the duty of the judge to assert who succeeds in reaching the winning post firsthand if the second man has grounds for entering a protest is ifc not usual for him to do so after the judge has given his decision ? I think the committee who has been appointed to see fair play throughout the race is then at liberty to hoar evidence and decide to whom the first place should be given. It the committee' were aware that Howan wa3 out of it, wherefore take the trouble of starting them afresh ? Or if Nye felt sure than an infringment of the rules had taken place should he not have ceased rowing? When Hanlon went to Australia to row for tho championship of the world, a foul took place (as all sportsmen will well remember) and he entered a protest. The umpire after hearing both sides decided that as Hanlon benefited, if anything by the mistake his protest could not be entertained 1 wonder who benefited mo^t by the foul in question ! Do you not recognise the necessity of adhering strictly to all the rules, as no honor .can be attributed to the winner of the cup if there is any doubt of the fairness of tlie rowing throughout the different heats? Apologising for tres« passing, &c, yours truly,
