sentences passed on Count Ferdinand de Lesseps and M. Fontaine are a piece of cruelty, as it was never shown that they were actuated by persdnal motives, and the Judges, in inflicting severe punishment, were simply playing to the gallery. Count Ferdinand do Lesseps will probably be pardoned.

The American flag has been hoisted over the Palace at Honolulu, pending the President's deciiion as to the annexation of the Islands.
Owing to the apparent indifference of the foreign powers as to the fata of Hawaii, together with the Queen's proposal to sell the Sovereign rights to America, the feeling in favour of annexation is increasing.
