Notes and Events.

• : Whilst we desire that a suppoiter of the Opposition should be returned for the Rangifcikei Electorate, yet we arc glad to notice that the ' Liber d ' supporters of the present Government, who do more bowing down to wealth thau the Conservatives, have been well snubbed for their pains. At the last election Mr John Stevens made a capital fight with Mr Bruce, and he should have been the Liberal nominee without a question. Mr Stevens is not a rich man, and your liberal dearly loves the " loaves and fishes," so that the Association actually had tho check to form a deputation to ask Mr Arkwright to stand, ailtl persuaded Mi* Stevens to act as spokesman! This is the grandest piece of ingratitude that could hay? been invented—but these are your true Liberals ! Mr Arkwright, to his honour be it said, rebuked the deputation asserting that if a candidate had been needed he would have come forward, but he pointed out, what the Rangitikei Liberal Association should have thoroughly well known, that in their spokesman " there was a good candidate in readiness." Auctioneering in Palmerston bids fair to be played out before long. At present five firms are hard at work putting things lip to knock them down, and now two more are mentioned as being about to start 1 The Borough will not object, as they are willing to accept all license fees from auctioneers and publicans that they can get. It was even noted with a decided tinge of sadness that Mr McKenzie had done the Borough out of £40 a year by having taken his license out in the County within which he lived. It is refreshing to hear that they will now get double the amount to square the loss. The question, which does not'trouble the Borough, but may the auctioneers, is, is there business for so many ?
