The Public Works Committee report was read as follows : — We have the honour to report that since our last report to you that during the months of December and January last the day men have been fully employed on the roads, repairing and spreading metal. John Anderson is making good progress with his metal contracts, having finished the extension on both the Motoa and Cemetery roads, and is now continuing contract for repairs which we have no doubt will be finished during the present month. Your Committee would call the attention of the Council to the rotten state of the culvert up to Murray's corner, Union street and would recommend the same to be replaced with pipes before the winter comes on as it is continually falling in. We have also had the Forest Tree Nursery attended to by James Coley, a lai'ge number of the tree seeds have not come up but there is a good quantity come out and will well repay for the cost. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Stansell, That the report ot the Public Works Committee be adopted. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Ahem, That this Council dispense with the letter box at the post office. Cr Austin, in moving the resolution, said the correspondence the Borough received did not warrant them in having a box. It was a £ per cenc tax on our rate and was a luxury they could very well do without. Cr McMillan said he objected to the resolution, as sometimes, letters of importance were in the post, and not procurable unless they had a private box. Cr Stansell and Ahem also were in favour of dispensing wi f h the box. On a division being taken the resolition was lost, Crs Austin, Ahem and Stansell being for it, and the Mayor, Crs McMillan, and McPherson against. The Mayor also using his casting vote.
