The Egg-eating Snake.

The little egg-eating snake of Soufch Africa, which has lately been introduced at the Zoological Gardens, is interesting, not only from its being the first of the kind exhibited in England. The little reptile of 2ft long is scarcely as big as one's finger, and stretching capacities of its small mouth and jaws, in order to get the hen's egg into them, would seem absolutely incredible. We can suppose that only when driven to necessity it ventures on such a preposterous mouthful ; for even in South Africa there are intprvals when small birds lay no eggs. The example now at the gardens ha 3 swallowed pigeons' eggs since his arrival, though getting even them into his mouth might seem no easy matter ; but the keeper says it does it without any effort whatever. — Graphic.
