The Motoa Road.

We mentioned in our last issue just the fact that the public works com

niittee ojf the Bornugli Oddnbil baa itt3p*?!cLfeH the giavelling contract now in hand on the Motoa road and that they appeared in favour of con tinuing the work up to the cross ro.i ds , We are not su ; pri.-;ed at their coining to this opinion, as the present little bit is paltry in the extreme, being only some fifteen chains, whilst a road much less in getteral Use has had heady doable the gra\elling done b j it. The gravel ,now started on the Motoa road is about the centre of the sandiest part of the road, whereas another five chains would have so placed it that an approach to it would have been from harder ground. The desirabilty in moving in the matter at once arises from the fact that the contractor having made a start he would be placed in a better position to do it cheaper than if he was knocked off and commenced afresh. If the gravelling was taken some 12£ chains further it would place it to the centre of the cross roads and thus make a good job. The trouble about money is really a very small matter, the total outlay being under £40, and we believe the Borough has a good balance in hand. Whether the Borough has money or not at the present moment is of little consequence as the amount could be obtained in various ways, and within five or six months the Borough, if not rolling in wealth, will have a very large share of the new rates in and the license fees. It is not the money, but the time which is the essence of the consideration, as the Borough when in funds cannot execute the work as the gravel pit will have too much water in it, and to all who use the road, and they are all who live at Motoa and properties adjacent to the road, will have to wait twelvemonths to work in with the Borough's finance, unless some arrangement as we have suggested is made. If the Council will push this work on at once we fe.el sure not a single Burgess will object, whereas many, in addition to outsiders, will very much appreciate their foresight.
