The Shannon Cemetery.
At the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday a letter was received from Mr F. H. Haselden, Chairman of Shannon School Committee forwarding a resolution passed by the Committee protesting against the sections belonging to Mi* Gascoigne being acquired, on the ground that the sections abutt on the school property and that they are in every respect unsuitable for the purpose. The writer requested the Council to use every means in their power to obtain a more suitable site 1 for the cemetery. Cr Davis said he had inspected the sites and thought they were very suitable for a cemetery. The school being on one side and a road on the other, the cemetery was not likely to be close to any dwellings, and it would have a certain amount of isolation. A petition signed by 72 residents and ratepayers of Shannon, was presented by Cr Oridlands, objecting go the Council purchasing certain sections from Mr Gascoign as a cemetery site, arid stating that section 486 and 488 on the west side of the railway ' line were more suitable. Also that a larger area could be acquired for the amount to be paid to Mr Gascoign, whose sections were unsuitable for such a purpose for the reason that they adjoined the school grounds. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Cridland, seconded by Cr Tompsitt, That sections 486 and 488, Shannon suburban, be secured for the purposes of a Cemetery at £20 per acre.
