Saved from a Shark.
■ ' ' ♦ - .- ■ i The silver medal of the; Royal Humane Society has been conferred upon Mr Ihomas M'Dermott, chief boatswain of H.M.B Swallow. pn S Sept. 9, about 6 p.m.,, the sailing cutter of the Swallow, while cruising . off the south end of the Zanzibar Islands, anchored off Uzi Island, Half the men landed, leaving Mr McDermott, John Sadler H. Payne, Charles Lawford, and W. Bundle, ablebodied seamen, in the boat, Lawford and Payne had jumped overboard to bathe, when a large i shark was seen making towards | Lawford. The shark was only*, four : -, or five feet off when McDermott plunged from the boat light on tothe shark, . which £wasr lightened away for a 'short time by the splash. This gave tithe to draw the men into the boat. It is for this heroic * act that the medal has been given him.
