Dislike to Racing.
> ♦ • The Queen's antipathy to lacing is as strong as the Prince of Wales' pronounced love for it. The Hon. F. Lawley thus instances jHer Majesty's abhorrence of the national pastime . — " It is notorious that racing in general, and Ascot in particular, is regarded with disfavour by her Gracious Majesty, as will be shown «by the following story : — ln. 1856 the Ascot Gold Cup was won by Wingfield, an ontsider, belonging to a humble owner, by name Mr Walker (a . licen#d victualler), who was so delighted with his horse's victory that he led him round the Eoyal enclosure*, j under the window from which trie Queen was looking down 1 . The ceremony, accentuated by ,the demonstrative joy of the worthy man, went on rather longer than the" Queen approved, and, with displeasure strongly marked upon her countenance, she ordered a lord in waiting — the late Lord Breadalbane. if remembered right, to pull the window down. It is not to be expected that any step to rebuild the Ascot Grand Stand, or to rehabilitate the Ascot Cup, will be taken so long as her Majesty is spared."
