Manawatu Herald. SAT URDAY, DEC. 10, 1892.
Messrs Me Vl illan Rhodes & Co have sent us a large coloured almanac of very excellent execution entitled " nobody ax'd you sir, she i said." being really a mash pleasing portrait of a very pretty woman, Mi3s Ethel Matthews. It' is pnblia ed from " an original photograph. In addition, '. this firm, present 'with the picture a ballad entitled "Where are you going my pretty maid?" set to appropriate music by .»wr Alf Cooke. What may be termed the Almanac season has now commenced. Mr Gerbas, our local cabinet maker, is first in presenting us With a sample of his -'three coloured alraanacs.Jone of which. represents the dire misfortune of a market garden.n 1 resulting, as so like gardeners, in a liking for a bitof blood, as the animal is depio ed as having broken from the trap which he was drawing to join the hounds which so unfortunately for his owner, crossed his path; l; Little Jim" is a pretty st i y of a dying child, supported onrhis bed by his mother, view-* ing shadowy angels Scotchmen will ap preoiate the third almanac^ f rom it 3 being .a capital view of the port of ; Glasgpvv, with many of tb>; :^prihcipal^bniidin'gsvbf' r 'that* town,';''".. .:•:■■ :; ;-' ■:••. One^pi the un>jn-5 ployed had passed the nigh tin the lockup/ as being without visible means of support; and also because Ke had ; broken a .window at one of the hotels. The landlord did not press the damage and the delinquent being a wiser and sober man promised to leave the district if lee oif. He was granted the opportunity to remove himself at his own expense. Mrs Harris, of the 'Old Times' boot shop, allow others in the. trade to come and go, whilst she keeps on for ever. To meet opposition she is very- well provided with a hew stock of all kinds of neat boots and shops* at reasonable prices. Purohasers of Bhoes and boots would do well to inspect her stock before finally determining where to purchase. The .Resident Magistrate was unable to attend at the Court on Thursday as expected, andtwo J's. P. had to be « run in ' to inquire why others had been so dealt with. :'-..-..; The Feilding Jockey Club have-arranged to have the course connected with the telegraph line. As the wires run through our course it might be worth while if the Foxton Eacing Club inquired into the coat of putting a telegraph station on the course. The public would greatly appreciate such attention to their comfort. A clown ma pantomihe many years ago used to greet his audience with a " Here, we are again;" Messrs Thacker & Pallant might exclaim likewise as they re-opened this morning at Aberdeen House. Woman, the women* paper, asserts, that it is no longer fashionable for women to kiss one another This is fortunate, but as woman is becoming much too progressive it is just as likely it may soon be said not to be fashionable to kiss at all. This would indeed be most unfortunate. It would be too awful for a man's best girl to tell him ' consider yourself kissed. ' As though a man was not unfortunate enough when he gets married, an Ohio paper gives the following remarks :--" Mr William Jones, of Malta township, aged 83,; passed peacefully away on Tuesday las"t from single blessedness to matrimonial ■t)Hss, after a short sudden attack by Alic-* •^iossbrnVa blooming widow of thirty-five." r~On Monday tfle Ealmerston Standard will appear as a morning paper. ; Mr ' Lord had got the pipes in the artesian well at Mr Co ex's mill down, 250 feet without striking: %atqr, •when the^ disasi trous fire occurred, anditwas'then thought advisable to knock off, at anyrate for the present..; ■'■■ '..^-,vwr --,'-..K\~ ■■■-•;■/■;'■-■.■■■ Mr Mathias, so we'l knowa here as .relieving officer, has been in charge o^'tha Bank of Australasia during Mr Nixon's illnßfs.; . -.- . v , : j;. ;.-■;■.; -. - .. ■ ;■- . :;■ Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church tomorrow.
