We have to acknowledge the receipt, with thanks, of a publication issued by the New York Central and Hudson River liailroad Company, which contains not only a lavge scale map of the district served by the line, but also a number of capital views of America's Great Resort?. In Sydney a depatatiju, including 31 members of Parliament, presented a peti tion to the Minister of Justioe, asking for the remission of the sentenoe on the leaders of tiie broken Hill strike. The Minister made a vigorous reply, saying he did not consider the sentences excessive The men took the law into their own hands, and he declined to treat them differenth from others who had broken' the law. It would be a farce to release them after serving five weeks only. Their offence de manded something more than a merely nominal punishment. A fearful outrage had been committed by Tonquin pirates. They captured 80 women and children, and imprisoned them in a cave, announcing that they would bi set at liberty on payment of ransom by their friends. Police were sent in pursuit, and on the pirates learning this they suffocated the whole of the captives by burning charcoal in the cave, the entrance to which had been securely closed. A musical writer states that fine vocalists are rare in countries where fish and meat diet prevail, and that the' voice depreciates as families grow rich and increase the amount, of meat consumed, Naples and Genoa, where much fish is eaten, give few of Italy's singers ; and the sweet voices of Ireland are found in th« country, but not in the towns.
