THE MAYOBAL ELECTION
TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATU HERALD.
Sib, — My last letter having proved too much for " Advance," he wisely collapsed, bat I notice a weak effusion signed " Batepayer," in which some of " Advance's " ideas are echoed, appears in your last. Brally, the 'etter is hard y worth taking notioe of, but I may as weil put the genpine ratepayers right on one or two points. And taking the last part of " Ratepayer's " letter first, I fancy Mr Nye resigned his position on the Council so as to take that £10 for supervising the erection of- the punt. So much for that. Mr Nye's " caution " is admitted— it ranks on a par with that displayed by some of the other old sett ers in the district, and in my opinion that makes but a very- sorry argument in his favour. As a private citizen Mr Nye is an estimable gentleman,' for whom I entertain the highest respeot. He bat had a fair turn at the honors of the office, and I think might fairly make way for another Couuci'lor. Mr McMillan's ability and energy is admitted — he has largely contributed to the progress of the town ; he has taken part in all matters for the advancement of the district, and has given every indication of being thoroughly fit for the position. The business which Mr McMillan has built up is a monument to his ability, and if during his term of office, should he be elected, he devotei his usaal energy to the position. I feel sure that all genuine ratepayers will not regret the choice. I therefore strongly advise |my i fellow-townsmen to look at the matter in a fair and impartial manner, and as an encouragement to others to come forward and assist in local matters, I hope they will roll up and vote for Mv J. R. McMillan. I am, &c, ' Pbogbess. Foxton, 28th November, 1889.
