The Dairy Industry.

We direct the attention of all who are engaged in the manufacture of butter or cheese to " The Dairy Industry Act " passed during the last session of Parliament, as otherwise, as is distinguishing feature of ;qur " liberal " legislation they Will 'become liable for all sorts of firl es and penalties, ranging from the 11 not exceeding M £5 to £100 and the cancellation of certificate. The main points are ; — That every owner dairy factory or creamery at Which either cheese or butter or both, are manufactured for export, must have a duly registered Trademark. " Factory " or " Creamery " means a place established for receiving millc or cream from the public for manufacture* but a I" Dairy '" hleahs ft. place where millc is manufactured hot being •either a factory or creamery, which thus brings in every settler who exports, his manufacture. Thus every dairy is subject to the visit of an Inspector and ha has power to open any package of cheese or butter to see that it corresponds with the description For failing to mark any article for export the owner is liable to a penalty not exceeding £5. It is not only the outer ease which has to be marked bnt every cheese or pat of print butter must be itiarkecl the words " New Zealand dairy," or " New Zealand factory " or " New Zealand Creamery " but on pats N.Z. may be used instead of the words New Zealand. Each box or package must also clearly have mar'ced thereon, whether the contents are Butter, Blended butter, Pat butter, Separator butter, or Biitter fat, in the case of butter, the nieoities of description being very fully set fuf in the Act. Cheese has to be described as, full cream chepse, quarter -skim milk, half skim-milk or pure skim-milk cheese. Anyone acting falsely is liable to a ppnalty of not less than £C> and not more than £100 ! This brief outline will, we trust, direct the attention of our small farmers to the necessity of getting, a copy of the Act to guide them clear of the many pit-falls laid for their entanglement.
