The American Election.

Later accounts credit Mr Cleveland -with 299 votes in the Electoral College. He bad the largest majority recorded since General Washington was elected first President of the United States* $he Republicans CariM \k StatSS" and the Democrats 25. The latter won Ohio (which has 23 votes, and has hitherto been Republican) by a small majority, and carried Major McKinley 'sown district by a majority of 1000. There is great surprise at the i result of the voting. Major McKinley refuses to speak, but General Harrison's party admit that the country is clearly hostile to prohibitive tariffs. The leading newspapers rejoice at the downfall of plutocracy and corruption. The New York Herald says theresult of the election means that the States prefer a democracy to ail oligarchy. The World says the robbery of the masses by a powerful few will now be stopped. The Times describes it as really a revolution. The Tribune considers it the greatest surprise in the political history of America. Mr Foster, Secretary to the Treasury, says the verdict has been returned against the McKinley tariff. Pending the repeal of the McKinley tariff the Democratic press urge l the Senate to pass bills removing all duties on wool and other raw materials embraced in the Bills which the House approved last session. They also urge that Congress be convened in April to consider the question of tai iff reform. I — — —
