Mr Buchanah at Carterton
Mr W. (\ Buchanan, member for Wairarapa, addressed a public meeting at Oarterton on Saturday last. About 200 persons, were present and the meeting was a very appreciative one. Mr A. Booth (the Mayor) presided. The speaker gave a brief outline of his trip to England, and the places he touched at en route. Judt ing from "what he saw of the fruit export trade in Tasmania, and the prices obtained ■ vs .'-London, he was strbngly of opinion that the fruit industry of New Zealand would ultimately prove as important as the frozen meat trade had become, notwithstanding that they had met with many drawbacks in starting in it. What be saw of the dairy produce of New Zealand on the English market convinced him that there was a large future before it. There was an unlimited market for produce of the best quality, and he laid great stress on the necessity for keeping up the quality and the country's g.xxl name. Turning to what was done Last session, he spake strongly in favour of the L*ro.pe.rty.~Tax as against the^ Land and TtfcoiUfc Tax, as the latter faxed paople tor. their mortgages, and the exemptions were on au unfair basis. H<? spoke against the Graduated Tax, which punished a man in proportion to his industry. The Income Tax, he pointed out, was harder upqn the, country than upon the town, and he showed its anoma lies, which exempted each partner in a business but allowed only one exemption to two or more people working land in common, although each might liold his separate title. He spoke strongly against the abolition of : freeholds; and showed by extracts from speeches- by -the Premier that hn object was Laud Nationalisation. Ho drew attention to the weak points in the, Labour Bills that had become law, in respect to the surplus, he said the £•200,000 granted for public works was to bribe constituencies, and that it should have gone to a reduction of the Customs duties He was
against further borrowing, except for urgent necessary works -r tho - completion of the-"Welington-Wood-vilTg~ltn«s—being one and ; for roads to opeil up Crown lands- There were many points lie reserved for '"meetings during the week at the various townships. A hearty vote of thanks for his address concluded the meeting. —Press Association!.
