Importation of Lobsters.
On two separate occasions Mi? Purvis, chief engineer of th© s.s, lonic, attempted the task of bringing out live lobsters to New Zealand, but both attempts proved utter failures. The third attempt, how* e vev, has ended differently, and when
the lonic entered port yesterday she had on board nine lobsters, alive and well, out of twelve which started from England. They are a present from Mr Ewen, of the firm of Sargood, Son and Ewen, of Wellington, who has expended considerable sums of money on these attempts, and 'will doubtless be considerably gratified when he hears of the ultimate results of the experiment. They are intended for the Otago Acclimatisation Society, and will be sent South as soon as possible. On the first two attempts Mr Purvis, we understand, was guided in his treatment of the lobsters by the advice of experts ; those attempts failing, he on this occasion followed his own judgment, and was rewarded with success. Mr Purvis has also brought out for the Wellington Acclimatisation Society 22 Teneriffe partridges and a pair of Teneriffe grouse, sent by Mr Hamilton, of that island, in accordance with a promise made something like two years ago, which promise he has been unable to fulfil until now. The birds, which are very fine specimens, will be sent up to the aviary at Masterton, and the society is to be congratulated on their acquisition. — N.Z. Times.
