Mr Perceval has proposed to Mr Munro that New Zealand and Vice toria shall take joint action to urgthe British Government to enforce the provisions of the Magarine Act, which is now a dead letter. He thinks that the colonial butter trade would benefit if the Act were strictly carried out;
, At the Anglican Churoh Congress an animated discussion took place on the subject of vivisection, during which Bishops Barry and Moorhouse vigorously attacked the practice. The Bishop of Edinburgh declared that disastrous results would follow if it was supposed that Bishops Barry and Moorhouse represented the .voice of . the Church in this matter. Dr Victor Horsley, F.R S., attacked Bishop Barry with considerable warmth, and quite a • scene ' was the result.
Lord Houghton, Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, refused to accept an address from the Dublin Chamber of Commerce supporting the union of the Empire on the ground of its controversial character.
The Court circular announces that the Queen had a sincere regard and great admiration for the late Lord Tennyson. Mgr. Hirth, the Eoman Catholic Bishop of Central Africa, believes that tne ; evacuation of Uganda by the British East Africa Company will result in a repetition of the Soudan disaster.
Captain Lugard, in a letter to the Times, states that the commercial, political and philanthropic interests of Uganda require its retention by the British. Evacuation, he considers, will increase slavery and anarchy, and also entail the massacre of Protestant natives. The retention Captain Lugard says, wonld be neither difficult nor expensive. New Zealand long-berried wheat, ex-warehouse, is restricted at §2s 6d. j Frozen meat quotations are unchanged. New Zealand hemp is very firm, and as the holders of stocks are declining to sell except at an advance no sales are recorded. Danish butter, 182s per cwfc. At the wool sales there is fair competition, but faulty wools are weak. A large quantity of old wool has been sold at a slight decline in prices, except for the very best greasy sorts. ; l he Tabernacle requests Rev T. Spurgeon to succeed Eev. The editor and assistant editor of the Pall Mall Gazette have resigned owing to their disliking the change in the policy of the paper.
