Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, OCT. 6, 1892. The Bar.

The Manawatu River is how divided* one portion emptying ir:to the sea towards the north, and t i> other portion almost directly opposite the pilot's house, in what was the old channel years ago. The division of this volume of water is ilofc to the advantage of those using the bar, as there is noc the scour, so necessary to keep the depth on the two, as there used generally to be on the one. Ifc has been pointed out to us by those who understand these matters that a little expenditure would enable the north channel to be closed and the other one deepened. We have olso been led to understand that probably the i?egii ar traders would assist any movement made to improve the navigation of the bar. A certain number of sacks of soil laid down in the river channel, to the north of the new outlet, would quickly break the force of the stream running that way and turn it towards the south, and would thus cause this old channel to fill up, and secure the new, and far better opening, making the bar permanent, or if not permanent, at least secure for manyyears. It is a question that the Borough Coun cil should agitate, though practically they have nothing whatever to do with the river, but the main entrance to the town is an all important reason. We believe that if our member's attention was drawn to the matter, he would interview the Minister of Marine and ask him to obtain a report from the pilot and the captains of our regular traders as to our views on this work, and he might possibly secure a promise that if the outlay was not much, that some attempt would be made to secure this southern channel. The interests are those, not of Foxton alone, but of Palmerston, Woodville, and Feilding also, thus making a very large number of persons interested.
