Accident on the Gorge Road.

An accident of rather a serious nature occurred in the Gorge on Tuesday, but fortunately was not attended with loss of life During the day a youth named Lucas, about 16 years of age, drove a spring cart from Woodville to Ashurst to procure some stores. On the return journey, when a point about half- way through the Gorge had been reached Lucas drove too closs to the edge of the cliff, with the result that the wheel went over. The driver, seeing the danger, jumped out, and thus saved his life, as the vehicle and horse immediately went over and with a sickening tb'Au fell on to the rocks some OOfu below. The poor animal frightfully mangled, oae of the shafts entering the side of the jaw and protruding at the mouth. Neither hoise nor vehicle rolled into the river, the rocks preventing them from going further. The goods, however, fell out of the carfc and were lost in the river. The men •working on the Gorge road rendered al! the assistance in their power immediately on learning of the accident. The driver went on to Woodville shortly afterwards. We are informed that the horse "was borrowed from Mr Edwards (formerly toll-gate keeper in the Gorge, but now residing in Woodville) for the occasion, and was a valuable animal. The Gorge road in several places is not by any means as safe for traffic as it should be, and the accident only shows how necessary it is to exerciso great care in driving vehicles through.— U, Times.
