Manukau.
(PBOJf OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Since my last lettsr our township has been steadily increasing, new shops and dwelling houses rising in all directions, of the latter, that of Mr Brown is the most noticeable, lb is built on the little rise opposite the railway station, and has a beautiful background of bush. When it is completed it should look very pretty from the railway. The Ohau Racing club are making great preparations for their meeting ,«oua Boxing day. It is proposed to give away stakes to the amount of 'jJ£l5O, that being the sum required by the Metropolitan Club by-laws. An excellent course has been secured on «Mr T. Ransfield's property That gentleman has generously granted the club the use of his paddock free for the, first year and offers it on most reasonable terms for future meetings. After long delays the School Committee have succeeded in inducing tbe Education Board to complete the fencing of school grounds. Two very substantial shelter sheds have been erected and are found a great boon. The Inspector paid a surprise visit to the Bchool, and reported very favourably on ito condition. Our local medical man is now settled down to his duties. He is for the present occupying Mr Whiley's residence. A. Money Order Office and Post Office Savings bank has been established, and will no doubt piove a great convenience to the residents. It is to be hoped that the Government will soon put in hand the work of establishing telegraph communication. In spite of the continued, bad weather the lambing has so far been successful very few deaths being reported. Grass is in a forward condition owing to the mild winter. The much vexed questions of crossing to the various streets remains unsettled. At present there is only one, and that crosses the railway near the station. Frequently persons have to wait with conveyances till the train has finished shunting, before it is possible to cross. Settlers naturally resent that sort of thing.
