Such has become the demand for tomatoes that Groat . Britain has commenced drawing a part of the supply required from the United States. The • >aily News thus comments on the subject: — It has >een found on Atlantic steamers that the tomatoes shipped for the use of the passengers have been perfectly fresh and in good condition on arrival in England, and this without extra oare or precaution in packing. It is therefore believed that tomatoes can be placed on the London market in first-class condition. Light wicker-baskets will be used for packing them. The demand for tomatoes has been steadily increasing in England during the last few years, and physicians are unanimous in declaring them to be of great dietic value. Over a thousand tons were received last year from the Channel Islands alone, in addition to contributions from France, Spain, the Azores, and the Canary Islands.
