The Election.
Very great interest was taken by the Burgesses in the Borough Election on Thursday.
The candidates.,, were busy, mpving about amongsK' plajd ;/w«jp&b •'the majority the wllole day," "but Wilson was not to be seen till late in the afternoon. Traps were sent to bring up the outside voters, aiiftJ the r6sttlt, has 'been that very few, 1 d\d not l refeord their votes. The utmost good humour marked the events of the day. ■■ • <>.<. .;■■ . The counting of the votes appeared to those waiting to hear the result, as unreasonably long, as the poll closed at six and the result was not declared till half past eight, when Mr Gibson, the Returning officer declared the, numbers to be as follows : — J. E. McMillan ... 264 B. Austin . . 172 J. McPherson ... 158 \ E. Oshorae ... 154 T. Wilson ... 142 S. Startup . . 79 E. Walden ... 28 On the announcement, three cheers were given for Mr McMillan, and also for the other two successful candidates. Mr McMillan thanked the electors very heartily for the position they had 1 placed him in. The enthusiastic supporters then seized and carried him, shoulder high to Whyte's hotel. Mr McPherson was similarly taken to the Manawatu hotel. Mr Austin, not being present missed the honour.
