The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, SEPT. 10, 1892. The Poll.

Tbe excitement is over, the result has been declared, and the Borough Council has its complement of members filled up. We can heartily congratulate one and all on the result, as the successful candidates and the unsuccessful ones have all a good explanation for their various positions. We were pleased to see an election and one in which so much interest was taken, as it is a healthy sign, and encourages those who devote their time to the public to see their efforts appreciated. We were not surprised to see Mr McMillan head of the poll, we think he has by his past work deserved this recognition. Deserving it and getting it does not always run together, therefore it becomes doubly pleasurable to note this instance. Mr Austin has apparently, served his constituents satisfactorily, and therefore they were right to return him. We do not pretend to • be' i sorry to ■ see Mr Startup lett out, but we do not think he was anxious to be returned ;and merely stood to let the people express their opinion Now he has' ceased to be the public's representative, the hatchet will be buried. Mr MePherson will have his work cut out out to justify his replacing an old Councillor, and we hope he may be able to do so. We were surprised at Messrs Osborne and Wilson's failure, but a comparison of the votes polled will show how close four of the candidates were in numbers recorded. The fate of all four depended on the accident of a couple of voters attending or staying away. Mr Walden may congratulate himself he was not returned as his nomination paper was informal and steps would undoubtedly have been taken to oust him. . This fact probably aocounts for the few votes he received.

Now we have a full Council we trust every effort will be made to see that "the town is kept clean. The summer will soon be on us, and a delay may mean the loss of some useful lives. The Council should go earnestly into this question and, though it may appear not over dignified, rescind the motion affecting the appointment of Inspector of Nuisances, and place the power again in Constable Gillespie's hands backed up by any other authority he desires.
