The Concert.
The concert held" in the evening in aid of the above Club was an undoubted success, both musically and •financially',', 'this' being' attributed to some 1 ! new ' ideals', in 'the "shape of gleas,i duets,! an7l/^|rio iein.'g,'giyen., These numbers were. .much enjoyed, and had to be Repeated. l opening piece was an overture' "Gloria^ -in Excelsis," from Mozart's 12th Mass, played by Mr M. J. Ennis in his usual masterly manner. Mr T. r \Ennia then gave "Joe the Marine," r and . Was -applauded; •' Mrs ; Dernier, who followed next with " Ever of Thee," pleased the audience, and sang ihe.last verse for a well-deserved ' encore "The violin solo played by ■Miss Ballantine, with Miss Easton as accompanist^^he ..piano, -was a pleasing change," and took very well. The,; glee. .! ",Sea .i. : our; >oars >with feathered spray," sung by a company of ladies' 1 ttn'd 'gentlemen consisting of Mrs Cook, Misses McMillan, J. and E. Symons"," Stausell and Wiilliams, ,and,,]V/e,ssrsl4title k Hamer, Einis,'' Cook and Stansell, was indeed veiy well rendered, considering the short time.theyjiave tiad, to, practice, andMtie' audience Werefor an encore. .Mr .^tansell sang " 'the Chief Mafefe 'Story/" in very .good style, and was warmly applauded. The "Elfin Call," a duet hyi the pisses J. .and^E.^SympnSi.w"as'^bit)?eri > e^joyaiile-.,n..urnber, and; th^y hadvtq respond to an encore by a repetition^ The latter young lady, w,hQ is the p'd^segsdr of 'a deep contralto, made her first appearance, and at our next concert we should like to hear. h,my as. :a : soloist.' r Miss r McMillan's rendering of the song ! ''."When the tide comes in " was perfect, and SH.^ vl-^ dyeam wi%iAj^'^p^ l: "VIsing equally we.il received. The Quartette " Oh, -who will o'er the downs so free," sung, by,. Messrs kittle anil 1 Cook-'aiid 'Mrs' Cook and' Miss E. Symon^/ was -next given, and the last number on the first part of the' programnieva detection 'by ahr local brass band, had to be abandoned, owing to sevevaVof the members .not, being able attend. ,-s\hs second part opened with the waltz a i\ T enfcl)ia,-Vi, played by Mr M.. Earns; > and MiuHaxoftr,! whc>imade hevdebuti' sang "Thy Face " very nicely, 1 and gave the last, verse: for an. encore* This was followed by a trio "Ye Shepherds, tell me." by Mr and Mrs Cook, and Miss McMillaii was one of the gems of the evening, and they had to repeat it. , Mi: Alf Fraser then amuse^thif $&%& ¥} !®j n minutes with a^'vecitafti<ih" emitted -" The Blacksmith's Story, and was applauded. The comic song " Och.. rforah^MoGree,;' i'y ;Jfo"T/En'ni^was very 1 well 'r&ceivetli'TMfc we' woiM like [ seen him-dressedih 1 a' ; 'charapter.,, Mips.^yUliama f! pan& ," Only.to-.see .fchjj'.&W, agWp"-.^-is'to be congratulated on herein ging, ; She certainly deserved her encore, and repeated the lastnverse. A cor.'riet solo by Mr Keen was well > Playad,, and 'ha'd ; also!, toy give anothei-'ifeii/.;; .Misa Symons''.yas -h^ /Mth' •"SMd ' san i '< Mbng ' the fldW^rs," ' anfl 'm ; Little 'folloWeA ! ' witli'-"The latfdjtJg;' :.of the Pilgrim Fathers," both- being ; pleasing numbers. The hard- worked ■secretary, Mr Cowles, then thanked the ! &xswms §>Fi^ 9^J^ ra xi a^ ; and also' took tne opportunity to publicly thanir^jsK^o^; 0 Wfcapdji offered their services. The glee ■:«? From Oberon in Fairyland," sung by ;the company; before mentioned, proved also an attractive item, and the concert was brought to a close with sfßgfaf yGty Mr' M?.l J^jJ&.nnisJaiCpsSn'pa^aie^ycptli', of: the singers, and Mr McMillan acted as conductor. We hear the Club will net close jm £8, which will materially help them.
