The Chairman of the Manchester Ship Canal Company states that the antagonism shown to the project by the railway companies and the people of Liverpool have delayed the opening of the canal a further fifteen months.
Several men rescued from the Park Slip colliery died after having been brought to the surface. Thirty-one additional bodies have been recovered- from the Park Slip Colliery at Bridgend. They were in a ghastly state, and were only recognised by the clothes. Unionists attacked non-Unionists steamers carrying salt to Chester. The police were called in to guard the vessels.
A thousand men are being dismissed from the yards at Woolwich, owing to slackness of work. Mr Peck, of New York, gave evidence before the Labour Commission that the McKinley tariff had benefited 67 industries and largelyincreased the earnings of those employed in them. Helywood, cotton manufacturer, is reducing wages and shortening the hours of labour owing to depression in the trade.
An immense block of buildings in Jewin crescent, Aldersgate, has been destroyed by fire. Twentyseven firms snffered more or less.
Two more Hamburg immigrants have developed cholera at Gravesend and four Russian immigrants at Liverpool are down with it. The Daily Telegraph says that Redfern, Alexander & Co.'s estate is expected to yield bad results in liquidation. Dr Vanderbyl's death complicated matters, as it caused the withdrawal of the capital invested by him in the business.
A receiving order has been made on the debtor's own petition.
The Stock Exchange has regarded, the firm as weak for some time.
The Post Office recommends the ' reduction of the Australian postage rate of 2d, and suggests that Id be the rate for post cards. Mr Henniker Heaton is jubilant, and strongly urges the introduction of penny postage for ocean-borne letters at once.
It is feared that cholera may spread in London owing to the water supply.
