Borough Councillors.

On Monday next the Returning Officer will receive nominations for the office of Councillors in the room of three Councillors who retire. We own we should like to see a contest, not for the very small amount of grist such action would bring to our mill, but that the whole question of Borough administration might be canvassed. At times we hear a lot

of muttered grumbling but at the time it is of any use to grumble' no otte comes forward to act as the mouth piece of the dissatisfied. Nearlyevery Councillor hold's his seat simply from the want of interest of the ratepayers, and they are unable to truly say that they are thc peoples' choice. Both for the Councillors and . the ratepayers &u election would be of advantage. Our country friends are imitating too much that which Mr Travers said of them, " that they simply sat on a fence and laughed whilst their beeves grew fat ;" at atiy rate they laugh in their comfortable chairs of an evening at the townspeople doing all k their local body work for them. This is not as it Should be, they have a duty to perform as weli as Others and they should be quite as able to be patriotic as their town neighbours, and should better know the needs of the outlying portion ofthe Borough. Now that an election is nigh they should certainly see that some one representing the suburban or country district was placed in the Council, as otherwise they must not grumble if their highways and byways are impassable. The good old saying is as true today as when it was written that Heaven helps those who help themselves.

The Bev. Innes- Jones will conduct services on Sunday at the usual times.

Two ratepayers attended the Council on Tuesday. We were surprised at the gathering until a little matter cropped up which explained everything. Cr Startup had risen to make a speech, in fact had made a start, when Cr Williams interjected a remark whioh caused Cr Startup to stop and complain to the Mayor, such conduct was calculated to make him forget what he was going to say. It unfortunately had the effect, for in another minute Cr Startup sat down. A good speech was lost and the audience disappointed. Why does not the Mayor keep order ?

As the question of the water supply is now under offer to the late contractors, as will be seen by reference to our report of the Borough Council, we refrain from making any remarks until their reply is known.

Sir George Grey on Monday was pre sented with a congratulatory address on the attainment of his SOth birthday. An immense attendance at the Bink received him with great applause. The Mayor of Wellington was in the chair, and opened the proceedings in a capital speech, which was also well received. Sir George Grey replied at length in an interesting speech dealing with himself, as polides were barred, and at its conclusion requested that the. address might be put in the Free Public Library, whioh the Mayor promised should be done, as they would be glad to have a record of that meeting and cf Sir George Grey's association with Wellington and its inhabitanta.

Thq Manawatu Bowing Club hold their annual meeting, as advertised, to-morrow night. A good attendance is requested,

To-morrow Messrs Stevens & Gorton hold their Feilding stock sale.

With every apology to Cr Startup for reporting him so fully, as we know he has before publicly stated his objection to our aotion, we cannot, in the public interest, fail to note the new and startling attitude he took up on the advertising question on Tuesday He actually, but informally, rose at the Council table and proposed that something should be advertised ! Every Councillor seemed to have been afflicted with an electric shock, and, '* What ! advertise ?" was a query with which the startling announcement waa received.

A diabolical attempt was made on Monday to wreck the train from Auckland near Hamilton. At O'-Neill's road crossing two sleepers were so placed that if one did not derail it the other would be successful in doing so It was scarcely the work of children, as the sleepers are too heavy. One was placed with the end down on the hollow of a cattle guard, with the other end projecting, so as to catch the wheels of tli3 engine. Mr T. H White, passing, saw the obstruction, and removed it before the passage of the train, and informed the police.

On Saturday Messrs Thacker & Pallant -will open a sale of boots and shoes in Aberdeen House. The sale is only for 14 days so that buyers must call early and often. This is just the sale that is wanted and we expect that the proprietors will not go away unrewarded. The stock is entirely new and will comprise a large assortment of ladies and children's, men's youths' and boys' boots, shoes and slippers.

A veiy decided earth shake was felt in Wellington and surrounding districts yesterday morning about three minutes past 8 o'clock, says the N.Z. Times. There was a sharp shock at first, and after a distinct quivering for about 10 seconds came another shock less severe than the opening one. The direction of the shake was from S.E. to N.W. The shake was also felt here.

The Minister for Lands yesterday informed Mr Duthie that the Stock Bill contained provisions providing for the inspection of meat and the better sanitation of slaughterhouses, but throngh the action of the House that measure had been dropped. Whether the House would again allow it to proceed he did not know, but if so, the same provisions would be made as formerly.
