Foxton Borough Council.

A special meeting was held at the Library Buildings on Tuesday afternooh. Present— The Mayor (G. Nye), Crs Williams, Stansell, Austin, Startup, McMillan, and Ahern.

The Mayor said the meeting was called to consider the advisability of making a further effort to secure an artesian water supply. Councillors were aware that the contraot first entered into had ended.

The Clerk read a statement of expenditure up to date which came to £14.

The new proposals from the contractors were laid on the table. They also wanted 2s a foot extra in driving a two -inch pipe when going through shingle or boulders.

The contractors omitted to mention whether they were agreeable to abide by the conditions previously fixed upon.

Cr McMillan said he objected to give the 2s a foot extra required. He would be in favour ofthe contract being thrown up.

Cr Stansell said he thought they should give the contractors an opportunity to start again on the same conditions as fche last contract, and they be given an area to choose where to drive.

Cr Williams thought that some offer should be made to the contractors, as they could hardly expect outsiders to prospect for water. At present the ratepayers had only spent £15.

Cr Stansell proposed, Cr McMillan seconded, That this Council make Messrs Lord and Lewis and offer to sink an artesian well on the "same terms as the last trial. The site to be selected by the Council.

Cr Austin said he would oppose . the resolution. He thought, the pipes were too small. He would support nothing but a three-inch pipe, for then he believed they wonld get water.

Cr Ahern believed in a th^ee-inch pipe. It wouid be better in case of an obstruction being met, as the obstacle couid be blown away. The Mayor said it was a case of £. s. d. The three-inch pipe would, cost £110, to which the past cosfc must be added. He thought the* Council would be more likely to get water with a three-inch pipe. Cr Williams would go for a threeinch pipe if the contractors would give them a guarantee. Cr Stansell would be in favour of a three-inch pipe if there were funds. He feared the ratepayers would object. It was not certain water would by got at 200 feet. ' Cr Austin did not think the money I was such an important sum for a, water supply. The amount could. I be collected by subscription. The Mayor said all the vote left was £82 and until a further vote was made by the Council no more ! money could be spent. Cr Startup would like a 8 inoh service but o*bj ected to the tender put in. He thought tenders should be advertised for. At present there was no data.

Cr Williams never expected anything else from Cr Startup. 1 For the past 3 years the Council had been seeking information about the cosfc of sinking If the time taken by the men was reckoned up it could easily be seen what the cost of sinking would be. Cr Stansell was not in favour of calling for tenders until the contractors had had the offer to make another attempt, as they certainly had sunk money in the trails already made.

The Mayor believed that the. same obstruction had bent both pipes. He said the further you go from the Main-street the greater would be the cost for pipes for leading the water back there. The resolution was then put and carried.

Proposed by Cr MoMillan, seconded by Cr Williams, That the site of the artesian well be on that portion of land in Main-street near No. 1 well. — Carried.
