Liberal Government and a smaller number of members in the House has not prevented' the Government Printer from- '"stating. .in liis report that " the increase in bulk of both the Parliamentary Papers and Hansard for last year is a noticfeable feature, each making one volume more than they did during the previous, year.!" , , Is it any wonder ? The Governaaaenfc Printer states that though the reduction in the price of Ilansani lias been reduced one-half, its circulation. shoAvs no equal proportion tp the free circulation. Every- member has thirty copies of Hansard free of cost to choke his supporters with. What a horrible deluge of talk ! During the quarter of a century which has elapsed since 1867, seventy-h' ve volumes of Hansard have been ' published. These comprise 58,079 pages', and the columns measure 66,849 feet, or a little over 12£ miles in length ! being an average of Half a mile per . session . We wonder how many miles the Hon. Mr Seddon is answerable for opt of his length. The Department is kept pretty busy. The value of the work done last year was £34,966, and a profit of' £7,851 was made^ The number of stamps printed total into large figures, for postage and reve--82,897,520 ; for newspapers postage, 4,389,240; for newspaper wrappers, 287,514 ; postcards, 996,750; postal notes, 270,600 ; Duty stamp3, 404,---101; Be ; er duty, 132,776,/, ' ailway stamps; l4'4!ooo ; 'Sartiban* stamps; 240,960 ; Tongan stamps, 105,000. There were 6ight special duty 1 , stamps printed .representing .the value of £22,978. V ' The department also printed 2,141, 198 railway tickets; 15,796 season , tickets'; 855",606 flag-station tickets ; 76,000 4 luggage, tiqke.ts; 60,025 parcel t(c^e'<|S : -'' . / an 4' . l^^ n y other, special tic&eis. ,J This department^ also oversees the charges made tor advertising, reducing the same where 1 any excess has been made, but oui.of.J?Blo4o worth, the only amount deducted was £109.
