Flotsam and Jetsam.
• (By Motditi.) I propose to let the loafer of the quasi-respectable genus "loaf round " in peace for another week ; by-and-by, when there may be nothing better to write about, it will be all the " hotter " for him, perhaps. Meantime something better has turned up, or nice 1 ' to think about at any rate. I notice in an exchange that a German scientist has made a discovery in ;the i matter of electricity surpassing even Mr Edison. The discovery is that in the act of kissing on the contact of the lips an electric spark is generated. This is an altogether noteworthy circumstance, although those who are given that way may not choose to be warned off from such contact. If " electricity is life, ' as the advertisement says, it is almost certain to have much to do with love, and it may explain many phenomena in relation to it i that have been hitherto obscure and difficult of comprehension. For example, when a beautiful lady looks you straight in the eye— they will do it, sometimes -the captivating glance has a direct tendency to develop palpitation of the heart. Why ? Electricity, of course. And what then ? Bless you, my dear madani, don't you see that the German philosopher and Mr Edison and science are just on the point of finding out ways and means to make life twice as nice through the development and application of electricity. Certainly the German philosopher has reached the first stage in discovering the electric spark in kissing, aad now that the study of science is so much the fashion there is every probability that the investigation of this particular electric spark will be pursued with all the zeal and ardour that its nature merits. It is a subject capable of much profitable and interesting experiment, and as such I commend it to those of our young " sparks " who may be able to read this par with understanding. Some weeks ago there was much talk among our athletic citizens about a "Tug of War" competition. So many other towns were having tugs of war, and Foxton surely would not be behindhand. Accordingly, a committee was appointed and advertised. Has that committee done anything ? Is it alive or dead ? Thinking of it reminds me of an old story. "How is your father?" asked a man of his friend. " Dead," was the reply. Some tinje; elapsod before the friends met again, when the forgetful one enquired once more, " How is your father ? " Still dead " was the quick reply. So of our " Tug of -War " committee ; the reply to any question concerning it is " Still dead ! " Perhaps it is only asleep ? I wonder can the voice of tha press wake it.
