Foxton Borough Council.
A special meeting of the above Council was held at the Library buildings yesterday at '2.80 p.m. Present — The Mayor (G. Nye), Os McMillan, Startup, Ahem, Williams and Austin. The meeting had been called to receive and act upon the report of the committee upon the artesian water supply. The Clerk read the following report : — Gentlemen— We have the honor to report that at a committee meeting held on Wednesday last re artesian water supply, that it was resolved, That in the opinion of this committee it is necessary to have a farther supply of water in the Borough and they recommend the Council to have an artesian well sunk at a cost not to exceed £100. (Signed), George Nye, Chairman . Cr Williams wanted to ask if the gentlemen who formed the committee thought it wise to risk £100 in securing artesian water. He held the risk was as great as it was two years ago. He did not think the financial position justified £100 expenditure,- '•■.,.'■ Cr McMillan thought Cr Williams did not understand where the money was coming from, The subsidy received was £35 and next year it would be £80, therefore no other expenditure would be interfered with, as these subsidies had not been taken into consideration when estimating, the revenue. - • Cr Ahem wanted a limit to the boring, so as to know at what depth the contractors could be stopped driving. The Mayor said hs thought the offer of the contractors was quite' clear. He detailed the particulars. He understood that they meant only going at the outside 200 feet. Proof already had been given that water has been struck at 150 feet and he thought it was pretty certain that water would be got at 200 in the town. The difference in level of the swamp and town was 15 feet The matter had been discussed times out of number, this was only a question of funds. He would have liked to have seen the property owners offering to have paid a third. He had j always been an advocate for a good water supply for the town. Mr Wilson had been to a considerable expense in securing water which h e '
thought was proof we should get water. The making of any town ivas good water and good drainage. If water was not obtainable at 200 feet he would say go further yet. It was understood that this money was not to interfere with the ordinary • expenditure. If water was got, the Main street would have to let most • of their rates go towards the roads, on the' outside. . . ■ - 1 - ' -' Cr McMillan proposed and Or Ahei'fl seconded, That a report of the committee be adopted, and that Messrs Lord & Lewis' tender be accepted as contained in their letter of the wth August, and that a committee consisting of the Mayor, Cr Williams and the mover be formed! for the purpose of drawing u^: specifications.—Carried. ' ' : -* ' Cr Startup -proposed, and Cr Williams seconded, That the' site of the artesian well be on that portion of land between the Bank of Australasia and Mr Ennis' tailor shop. — Carried. Cr Williams wanted the poimcil to grant the public works committee power to permit Mr Border right to erect ■horse-jposts in front of his hotels - • ~. It was understood that the public works committee should use thendiscretion.
