Foxton Borough Council.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at the Library buildings yesterday at 2 p ra. Present -the Mayor (G. Nye) Crs Williams, McMillan, Austin, Startup, Ahem and Stansell. The minutes ot «the last meeting were read an confirmed. The following correspondence was read. From Treasury forwarding the sum of £35 12s 2d being balance of subiidy due. Prom Land and Income Tax Department stating the taxeable value of the Borough was £83,698; The following accounts were passed for payment : -C. Spring, £8 2s 3d ; J. Sullivan, £6 5s ; T. F. Gibson £6 5s ; Manawatu Herald, £141556d;T. P. Williams, jun., £1 2s ; H Border, £2 ; C. Warne, £16 Os lid ; J. Gillespie, £2 10s ; Charitable Aid, £1 lli.8d; T. F. Gibson, £2 ; R. H. Barber, £1 15s 6d ; Cemetery account, £2 10s ; C. Spring, £2 10s ; Library, H. Blake, £1 10 b. The following tenders for the Shelter shed were opened : — A. Must grove, £42 2s 6d ; . Jonson, £45 10s; T. Easton, £39 7s; W. H. Gerbes, £42. The following resolutions were passed. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Williams, That the Inspector of Works employ labourer to form a track across the sand-ridge on the public reserve for the use of the night soil carts. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Ur Startup, That the clerk be instructed to find out the reason why King's child has not been reported as having diphtheria. Or Williams thought before carrying the resolution the Council should, have a copy of " The Health Act " before them. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Stansell, That the following sums be spent to improve the Foxton Public reserve, £15 for planting sand-binding grass on sand drifts, also £10 for planting forest and ornamental trees. The work to be carried out under the direction of the Public Works committee. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Austin, That the Inspector of Nuisances be authorised to enforce Borough By-law Part 111, subsection 69. On a division the motion was lost. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr McMillan/ That T. Easton's tender for erecting shelter shed at £39 7s be accepted. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr Stansell, That the Inspector of Nuisances report to this Council the names of persons having unclean premises. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Startup, That Mr Alzdorf and Mr Osborne report re Diphtheria be referred to Dr Dermer to report to the Council. Proposed by Cr Stansell, seconded by Cr Ahem, That Sullivan's wages in future be 6s a day the same as Spring's. Cr Austin desired to know whether Mr Sullivan had asked for this rise. He believed thot he was very well satisfied with what he was getting. Cr Ahem thought the man Bhould have a fair wage, as the ratepayers had to pay. Sullivan was a good working man. , Cr Williams said that the position was tendered for. He could understand calling for tenders for Spring's position. The Mayor said that if Sullivan's wages were raised to 6s there would be many ready to jump his claim. He preferred to see Sullivan remain as he is, as he is always employed wet or dry. Cr Stansell said that Sullivan had not spoken to him. He bad always seen him doing his best and he had a knowledge of the work and district. It was not because the work was tendered for that the pay should not be raised. The resolution on being put to the vote was lost. Proposed by Cr Stansell, seconded by Cr Ahem, That foe Town Clefk be authorised to communioate with the owners of properties that have fences on the roads belonging to the Council and be requested to remove said fences. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Austin, That this Council go into committee for" the purpose of considering the desirability of sinking for artesian water. On Council resuming the above resolution was reported and carried. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Stansell, That it is desirable to vote a sum of money for the purpose of driving for artesian water and that a committee be formed consisting of the Mayor, Crs Stansell, Austin, Startup and the mover to report on the subject.
