Nijhni Novgorod,

NuHNi, or Nizhni Novgorod is both a province, and also the name of the capital town of the province, situated in Central Russia. It is world-wide known owing to the great annual fair, now opened, being held there. The town is situated on the rivers Volga and Oka, and lies to the east-north-east of Moscow 265 miles. There are three annual fairs held in this town, but the ?hird one,, which begins at the end of this month and continues into September is by far the greatest in the world. Until 1817 this fair was held in Makarif, but in that year a most destructive fire almost destroyed the town, and the site was moved to Nizhni Novgorod. The normal population is some 70,000 but the influx for the fair raises this number, during its continuation to 350,QP0, thus showing the importance of the trade which totals, per year, to close oh twenty millions of pounds. The townspeople appreciate the importance of their position and have erected an enormous market-hall, and also sixty blocks of buildings for booths, containing 2580 apartments, all separated by fireproof walls., The manufactures carried on in the town includes cloth, leather, steel-goods, wax-candles, tobacco, beer, pottery and ship-building.
