for the gratification of the chiefs and squaws he was handed over to a half- white, who acted as interpreter and tattoo artist of the tribe. This individual practised the latter branch of ibis calling on the unfortunate captive's body, and for six whole months the tattooing went on until the captain's entire body was transformed into a brilliant panorama. The dyes used, red and black, .poigpned the whole system of the 'victim, the body swelling so that a terrible state of ill-health ensued. -At- 'last an opportunity for^ escape , occurred, and the captain during the night made a successful clash for 'liberty. While travelling into the white territory he was mistaken by . ranche owner for some wild beast, and narrowly escaped being shot. He made himself known just in time and was conveyed by the settler to the nearest hospital at Denver, where he slowly recovered from his terrible treatment. He was introduced to Barnurn, who engaged him. to show the results of his curious adventure, and since then he has appeared in every country of "the world.
