The Waiter and the Derby.
Frank Halleran, waiter, who had an interview with the magistrate at the West London Police Cour v , and
was requested by that gentleman to
p»y 40s or pa3s 21 days in prison, has serious thoughts about bringing an action to recover " money out of pocket " from somebody as soon as he performs one or other of the duties summarily imposed upon him He announces himself as cot only a disappointed but a defrauded man. It was his intention to assist at the Derby, and as he had received the straight 4ip to feaok Sir Hugo, he ex* peoted to clear a* year's inoome at one swoop. All his. misfortunes are traceable to. the fact that he desired to keep the seoretas dark as possible. For this. reason he did not ride from Manchester, his temporary residence to London, in the manner of ordinary railway travellers, but hid himself under thereat cf a first class carriage) where He was, found by a ticket;-00l-Jeotor , of .the London and NorthWe&tariißailway Company.. " "Where is your ticket ?" asked that officer. 11 Hush/ 1 replied Frank, "keep it dark?" •"' What ?„ asked the col totor. "Sir Hugo— forty to one !" » WhereV your. ;tioiet ; ?" , repeated the railway... man. Halleran, after *-. much mystijßoation, admitted he had not got one, rior had he any money ; -but these were mere details, •which would easily be put right •when Sir Hugo won. Almost at the very time the horse was passing the winning-post, Halleran, instead of beiiilf'iit "Epsom ready to receive his gainq, was listening to his sentence for travelling on the railway withotiif paying his faro. He is in doubt at present whether to bring his ao junior " money out of pocket " again&uttie railway company, the magistrate; or the stewards for not postponing Sir Hugo's victoiy until the could be present.
