Disappearance of an Island
The steamer Catterbun, from brings news'to Sydney, of a terrible earthquake, which is supposed to have occurred at Sanguier Island; in Celebes Sea.
A Dutch mail steamer left Sanguier for Titnur, in the Malay Archipelago, and the captain re ported that shortly after" leaving a terrible explosion occuried. The sky was darkened with ashes and smoke and the vessel was covered with ashes.
When the atmosphere cleared there was no trace of the Island visible.
The 'population is estimated at 12,000.
Several sailing vessels were at Banguier at the time and it is almost certain that they were destroyed,
The shock was felt at Timur
The Catterbun, while steaming through the Celebes Sea, passed for milos through debris arid wreckage of all kind's. ' '
