London

The Times expects a majority in favour of Home Rule of between 20 and 80, and that there will have to be another election next year to a certainty, and the Unionists will have to prepare to do battle for the integrity of the Empire. The Lord Mayor has opened a fund to assist the people of St John's and Lord Knut3ford urges the public to subscribe. The English insurance companies lose £1,000,000 by the fire, the loss of the Phoenix Company being the heaviest. In the Midlothian election Mr Gladstone polled 5750 votes, and his opponent, Captain Wauchop, 5077. Mr Gladstone's Majority was thus 667. The Unionists declare that is virtually a defeat. The railway line was cut near Clare to prevent a special train conveying voters reaching the place in time. The precaution had been taken, however, to send a detached engine on ahead, and this saved the train. The engine was capsized, but those on board escaped unhurt. The Liberal cry throughout the Midlothian election was " Vote for the Grand Old Working Man." The Conservative cry was " Vote for a resident and the Church of Scotland." The latter had a manopoly of the carriages and they claim a majority in Edinburgh. The miners, workmen and Irish voted for Gladstone and the Churchmen for Colonel Wauchop.

The latest returns gives the Liberals and Irish members 265 ; Conservatives, 230 ; Unionists, 38.

The Coroner's jury returned, a verdict of wilful murder against the man Neill, who is in custody on the charge of poisoning a number of girls in Lambeth.
