Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 12, 1892. The Cholera.

The news of the spread of cholera in Europe is bad, but at the same time, unfortunately, it is not new. The Asiatic cholera has played sad havoc for years and years, even in England, aa in 1848 58,290 persons are said to have died from that disease. Since 1866 when cholera was declared extinct in London, we have no report of its appearance in any other part of England, though in 1867 it was raging in Eome, Naples, Sicily and Switzerland. It was severe in Vienna in 1873. In 1884 the cholera created a panic at Toulon, then it spread to Marseilles, and a few cases were discovered in Paris. It was severe in the same year in Italy and Spain and more so in the last country in the following year, when in four months 12,837 deaths were reported. In Japan, in 1886, there were 37,000 deaths from cholera in nine months, and in India in 1886 the North West Provinces suffered very heavily. It unfortutunately appears now to have made another start.
