Essence of Parliament.
Parliament is wonderfully quiet. On Friday the day jogged along with only a debate on the Kanaka question and the West Coast Settlements Eeserves Bill.
The Wesleyan Methodist Church property Act Amendment Bill was read a second time.
The Minister for Public Works spoke favourably of the New Zealand cement and said it would be used when supplied as cheap as the imported article. The Premier moved : " That this Houge desires to express its opinion that the proposed introduction of coloured labour into Australia, by the resumption of recruiting among the islands of the Pacific, is a retrograde step, calculated to do serious injury to the people in Australasia, a3 we, 11 as to the coloured races concerned; and the House authorises Sir George Gray, X.C.8., M H.R., to represent this Colony in Australia in reference to the question." And after a short debate was carried.
The second reading on the Oyster Fisheries Bill was carried. The second reading of the West Coast Settlements Beserves Bill was carried.
