Messrs Swan and Smith, members of the English misrion to Morocco, hoisted the British flag at the Consulate in Fez, despite the Sultan's prohibition.
They formed an iron cordon round the flagstaff, in the face ,of an enraged mob, and the Sultan, fearing that bloodshed would ensue, flnalty gave his consent.
