A Meta! That DDes Not Rust
» To obtain a metal that will not rust, and obtainable in quantities that permits of its general use, has long been the desire ot the chemist. The metal, aluminium, has been long under examination, and as far back as 1754 was decided a distinct earth. Experiments were continually being made, but it was not till 1856 that it was able to be sold at a price at which it could be employed at all, and then it cost £Q an ounce ! Electricity, which has done so ; much for the world, -was used to treat this metal, and with the astonishing result that in June 1857, the article, which fifteen months previously cost £8 an ounce, was sold at 11s an ounce. In May 1889, it was quoted at 20s a pound. It is now still fur ther reduced, and a steam yacht is now in the course of construction, the whole of which, with its engines and proeller, will be constructed of aluminium. The total weight, including machinery, will be. only sixty -four pounds. Though the strength of this metal is equal to that of iron, it is only 2£ times as heavy as water. .
