Depositors in New Oriental Bank have recently been insuring themselves at Lloyds' for five guineas per cent. The other Eastern banks are considered to be in a strong position, and not likely to be affected. There is an excited feeling in the City, however, and the money market is depressed. It is likely that a call will be made to pay depositors 10s in the £, Bankers consider that the suspension will largely shake the confidence of Scotch depositors in the Australian banks. The manager ,of the Bank refuses to give any details of the circumstances which have caused the smash. The new Oriental Bank shares were offered at £3, but there were no buyers. Sir Richard Temple advises the British to establish a protectorate over the South Sea Islands whence Kanaka labour is to be recruited by the Queensland Government. This, Sir Richard says, can only *be done if France will agree to their islands being used for the recruiting of black labour. The Government has abandoned the Irish local Government Bill, owing to the opposition shown to it in the House. Long-berried wheat is quoted at 375. The market is flat. Canterbury lamb, s£d. The prices ruling for hemp are irregular, aad fair quality is quoted at £20. £outh Australian wheat, 87s, market flat ; Victorian wheat, 36s 9d, market flat. For Australian wheat on passage sellers are asking 34s 6d buyers refuse to give more than 345. For Australian wheat off-coast buyers want 34s 3d, but sellers will not part for less than 84s 9d. Mr Corvel, of Trinity College, has attained the position of Senior Wrangler of the University. Several of the ladies belonging to Girton College and Newnham College, Cambridge, have been placed as Wranglers. In connection with the poisoning of two girls in Stamford street, Lambeth, recently, the police hint that startlinng revelations, are likely to be brough out proving that there has been systematic poisoning of girls, and that there were seven or eight victims.
