He had served in the army for twenty-one years, during most of the time with the " Fighting " 40th of foot, and on the 10th March, 1861, for personal bravery in going under heavy fire to the reliei of Lieutenant Bees, who was wounded at Huirangi Bush, during the engagement at Waitara, New Zea'and, and carrying him off on his back in the face of the enemy, he received tbe Victoria Cross. On retiring from the army he had been in charge of the lodge at the main entrance to the Phoenix Park. The band of the 3rd Hassars from Island Bridge attended the funeral, and the Rev. J. C. Irwin, incumbent of St. James', delivered a panegyric on the deceased for his gentle, kindly, faithful discharge of his duty, as well as for the bravery he had shown in by-gone days for his Queen and country."
