Home papers record a case of magnificient devotion to duty on the part ol a French priest, the Abbe Doamonhn, of Paris. A murder was committed under circumstances which pointed to him as the perpetrator The Abbe was tbe last person known to have seen the un fortuuate lady alive. He was arrested, convicted, aud senteuced to iransporation for life. He was sent to New Caledonia, and placed among the other convicts there. The Abbe protested his iunoeense, but adduced nr proof, though a'l the time ha knew the actual murderer, and the devilish ingenuity with which he had managed to throw suspicion on the priest. The murderer, one lilosher, sexton of thd clusrcli, hud actually contessed to the Abbe ! Yet the priest, because ho gained the knowledge through the confessional, sooner than betr:n r a trust he deemed sacred took upon himself the disgrace and the punishment. Ec might have died under the fearful stigma had not Xlosei*, unable to bear the remorse, confessed to the authorities The investigation proved the truth of Kloser's narrative.
