An Extraordinary Deal at Whist.

The correspondent of the Times who recently reported a remarkable deal at whist at the New Club, Brighton, finding his statement, called in question in some quarters, has published the following statement, signed by the players ; - New Club, Brighton, April 9, 1892 We the undersigned, being all members of the New Club, I righton, make the following statement : On the 21st clay of March, 1892, we sat down to a rubber of whist. Two new packs of cards were supplied and opened in our presence. We cut for partners, with the result that Muggeridge and Gardner were the two lowest, and Buckley and Galpin the two highest, Muggeridge being the dealer. Huckley dealt the pack chosen by Muggeridge irregularly into five heaps face downward. He took them into hia hands, and having shuffled them again, said, " I will give them the " Yorkshire poke," and poked a few cards through from the centre. He then passed them to Muggeridge, who said, " I shall not take 4 the Yorkshire poke,' I will give them • the Devonshire poke.' " De then shuffled them in his hands, and also gave them a poke from the centre. Galpin then out the cards, and Muggeridge dealt, with the fo lowing result : — He turned up the four of spades, and had all the remaining spades in his hand. Buckley held all the diamonds, Gardner held aR the clubs, and Galpin held all tßr hearts. — Thomas B. Muggeridge, Sydenham ; J. F. Buckley, Greenfield, Yorkshire ; Rob. Gardner, Lloyd's; Thos. D. Galpin, Bristol House, Roehampton, London, S.W.
