Black Swans.

We regret to notice in the last Gazette that the Governor has been advised to proclaim that the imported birds known as black swans are to be considered native game. That this has been done at the instance of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society appears still more curious, as all sportsmen on this coast will testify to the wonderful increase of the swans and to the almost corresponding decrease in the ducks. We have no hesitation in asserting that the swans have spoilt the duck shooting, and that they in no way represent either so much sport or so satisfactory results from a day's shooting as ducks do. We know many instances where lagoons formerly crowded with ducks are now oocupied by the swans. We understand that not only do the swans necessarily consume a large portion of what would be the food of the ducks, but that they act viciously towards the ducklings, by which many are killed. We hope some reasons will be adduced why this action has been taken.
