The Receiver of Land Revenue Arrested.
«. Sometime since Mr G6o. N. Bagot, receiver of land revenue for the Wellington district, was suspended from office, but was subsequently reinstated. Since then an investigation into certain matters in conneotion with his department have been going on, and as a result an infor-< mation was laid against him for embezzlement- Acting upon that Detective Campbell proceeded to Mr Bagot's residence in College Green on Saturday night and effected his arrest, he being subsequently released on bail. The proceedings are being taken at the instance of the Audit Department, and the in-* formation alleges certain charges of conspiracy to defraud the revenue in connection with land scrip transactions, on the same lines, we understand, as those in respect of which Efcheridge, receiver of land revenue, at Auckland, was arrested some months ago. The amount involved is large, and the operations it is alleged have been extending over some years. Mr Gully, the Crown Prosecutor, being engaged in the Supreme Court, the Audit De* partment have retained. Mr Skerrett to prosecute, and it is understood there will be no delay in the proceed* ings. Mr Bagot is well known in Wellington and district, and is connected with St Mark's Church as minister's churchwarden. The news of his arrest has of course caused considerable sensation in town, - N.Z. Times.
