M an u kau.

(PJIOM OUH OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

A very large and representative meoting ot settlers was held in the schoolroom on Monday to discuss the best means of inducing a medical man to settle in the district. An active man is much needed in the district, consequently the attendance was large, and the deep intertst taken was manifest. After a good deal of discussion a committee was appointed to arrange for advertising for a suitable man. It was decided not to offer a guarantee as it was thought that the number of settlers in the district was a sufficient guarantee to a suitable man. There are several offers to- build or let a residence if required. We are therefore hoping at no very distant date to have a doctor in our midst. The groat need of one has been brought home to most people owing to diphtheria making its appearance in a couple of families. Fortunately it does not appear to be spreading and those who have been attacked are recovering.

The annual examination of the school was held on the 19fch and the results were most satisfactory, only five children failing to pass their staudards, and in each case there was good cause for failure owing to irregular attendance. The Inspector expressed himself as highly pleased with the work, remarking that the singing, sewing and drawing were exceptionally good.
