The Break in the Cable.
One of the cables is broken about three or. four miles from Lyell Bay, and the other between 16 and 18 miles out. The Department has 10 knots of the three core cable, and 2Q knots of the single core in Btock, so that if a steamer capable of doing the work was available at once the damage could be repaired within a week. Communication with the South Island, Australia, and other parts of the world will now be carried on with the single core cable, laid between Wakapuaka and "Wanganui.
Dr Lemon, Supreintendant oi the New Zealand Telegraphs, has cabled to Mr Warren, manager of the Australian Cable Agency, who represents the Eastern Extension Company at Melbourne, to send one of the Company's steamers from Singapore for the purpose of repairing the breaks.
In consequence of the break, the staffs in Wellington, Wanganui, and Wakapuaka will be required to work, for the whole of the 24 hours in various shifts.
